The Fisheries Data Resource
Mapping and Opportunities

Data and improved access to it can become a driving force for Icelandic fisheries and make the industry more competitive globally
People have realized that data is a resource for those who can process it into information for progress and benefit. To achieve this, data must be systematically collected, its quality improved, and securely preserved. Increased emphasis on data quality and the interconnection of multiple databases are effective ways to achieve greater value creation in the industry. Artificial intelligence and other technological developments in recent years have transformed the possibilities for data processing and handling. Today, data has become the driving force of companies and the economy, likened to fuel that drives innovation and forms the basis for strategy formation and decision-making.
The objective of this project is twofold: to analyze what data is currently collected in fisheries, where it is located, who needs it, and to identify opportunities and ways to better utilize the data for more effective administration, monitoring, and research enhancement. The project has outlined the main process of fishing, landing, processing, and export of seafood, highlighting the data generated throughout the process. New opportunities are identified, without further definition. The project can be considered the first step in unleashing new opportunities for greater competitiveness in Icelandic fisheries.
Icelandic fisheries possess a vast data resource that has been accumulated over recent decades. This primarily consists of data stored by public institutions, fish markets, fishing companies, and processing facilities throughout the country. This data has largely been used for limited purposes by its owners and is accessible to few others. There are instances where the same data is collected in multiple locations
